Yesterday was the first day I’d actually worn it, so I figure I’d post about the ‘why’ of it.

Joins, and how we piece things together, are really interesting to me. The idea was very translatable to clothing, as seaming is generally hidden, so it was a quick thing on which to focus. (There are several garments on my ‘to-make’ list that call out joins/seams, but this is the first one I completed.) Also interesting to me is the idea of comfort and clothing. It’s interesting on a few different levels: are the clothes physically comfortable? Do they mentally enhance a sense of comfort? Or does the inverse happen for both? I chose a blanket stitch because to me, it’s the coziest, most comfortable stitch out there, and because it raised the seams up and away from the drape of the fabric.

This isn’t a perfect garment. The color of the fabric combined with the color of the thread makes it looks like deerskin and suturing—interesting, but unintended. And frankly, for all of it’s ideas about comfort, it doesn’t fit that well. Finally, it’s pointed out to me that I should grow up and use an iron…someday.

I don’t think I ever uploaded the galaxy dress without the...

I don’t think I ever uploaded the galaxy dress without the paint. To sew it, I cut a large piece of stretchy black fabric from the back and attached that to the front, which was two pieces in navy blue interlock. The top of the front half was doubled and then flipped inside out to create a top seam. I didn’t worry about arm hole seams or bottom seams.

One of my favorite rings. When I was a kid, a camp counselor at a Girl Scouts horseback riding sleep away told us all to show plants our love through gentle touch. All week we went around petting leaves. Guess it stuck; I’m fascinated by plants’ textured look and feel. And I love textiles and hand working. Match made in heaven :). Anyways, thus the photo of the succulents.

Photo from my Instagram—circumscribed flowers.
